Pukekohe is located in the Auckland region but is inland, so you won’t find beaches here, but you can reach several beautiful beaches within a reasonable driving distance.
Here are some beaches you can visit within a 1 to 1.5-hour drive of Pukekohe:
Karioitahi Beach is a rugged black sand beach on the west coast, It’s approximately a 30-40 minute drive from Pukekohe. Its known for its dramatic cliffs and strong surf. It has one of the best surf breaks in the country. The black sand is unique in the fact that it is rich in iron. Take a magnet with you to make amazing patterns with the sand.
Swimming here is only advisable if you are a strong confident swimmer, but the beach walk is exciting and exhilarating on a windy day.
Awhitu Regional Park offers picturesque coastal views along the Manukau Harbour, native bush and wide-open spaces. While it’s not a traditional sandy beach, it’s a great place for picnicking, walking, beach combing, fishing, and enjoying the coastal scenery. If you enjoy golfing, a beautiful 9 hole course with amazing views awaits. Green fees of $15.00 are payable on site.
The park also features historical sites, including a World War II radar station and remnants of Maori pa sites, which add cultural and historical significance to the area. Awhitu Regional Park is about a 40- 45minute drive from Pukekohe
Located in the town of Clarks Beach, Waiau Beach is a small sandy beach along the Manukau Harbour. It’s suitable for a relaxed day by the water, is extremely safe for swimming and is around a 20-minute drive from Pukekohe.
If you’re willing to travel a bit further, you can visit Maraetai Beach, which is on the eastern side of the Auckland region, it’s a lovely beach area with a more sheltered environment. I highly recommend the drive from Clevedon to Maraetai Beach. In my view it is one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the country. It is approximately a 50-60 minute drive from Pukekohe.
While these beaches aren’t directly in Pukekohe, they offer a range of coastal experiences within a short drive, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty of the Auckland region. Keep in mind that New Zealand’s weather and surf conditions can vary, so it’s a good idea to check the local conditions and safety guidelines before heading out to the beach.
